Departure spot : Lanteuil bridge carpark (N 45° 07,758’ / E 001° 39,623’)

Welcome to Lanteuil, friends! You are about to set foot on one of the many itineraries along the Camino de Santiago de Compostela (or Saint James’s way). Go get your sandles and your back-pack !

The Saint-James pilgrimage is an itinerary that leads to the grave of the apostle Saint James the Major, located in the crypt in Santiago de Compostela cathedral in Galicia, Spain. The route was created when St James’s supposed tomb was discovered in the early 9th century. From the 11th century onwards, Compostela became a major Medieval Christian pilgrimage spot…

It was only in 1492 that Santiago de Compostela officially became considered one of Christianity’s " three most important pilgrimage routes " (Jerusalem and Rome are the other 2).

Useful information : Spot the blue and yellow scallop shells : they will guide you along the way !

Lanteuil castle (N 45° 07,745’ / E 001° 39,577’)

The castle was built in the 15th and 16th centuries. Back then, it belonged to the Turenne lordship. It was built by the Faucal family, and was composed of an entire ensemble of buildings around a courtyard. In 1987, Lanteuil became a classified Historical Monument.

There are scallop shells on the window lintels : pilgrimage symbols of the Camino de Santiago de Compostela!

Legend has it that these shells were associated with charity. The shell’s two valves represent love’s two precepts : to love God more than anything else and to love your fellow man.

What is the castle’s number ?

Write this digit down. It is the equivalent of A : A =_____

Useful information : By the church, there is a school and a square called “square Jeanne Buret”. Find this square.

Lanteuil school

In August of 1944, in Lanteuil school’s classroom, a document was signed stating the surrender of German forces stationed between Brive and Tulle. Their surrender was the result of negociations between the secret army, represented by Pierre Chaussade and German wing commander Böhmer. After endless hours spent in discussion, they came to an agreement : the troups led by Böhmer were to surrender and Tulle was to be liberated, which happened the following day. The final agreement was signed at Grande Borie castle, in Malemort by Böhmer, Captain Jack, for the British army, and colonel Jacquot, presented as the head of Corrèze’s FFI…

The Funny Flying Infiltrators ?

Very funny Zarbi… Non ! The " Forces Françaises de l’Intérieur " ! (French Interior Forces).

In August of 1944the preliminaries of the Brive surrender were signed. Brive was France’s first town to be liberated. What was the exact date of the signature in August 1944 ?

Write this number down. It is the equivalent of B : B =_____

« Hear ye, hear ye ! » (N 45° 07,761’ / E 001° 39,536’)

These steps were once used by the village police officer. He would climb them to make public statements. His audience would usually stand before the church. Every Sunday morning, after the drum roll, he would make public and sometimes private announcements in 5 different places around town. Nowadays, such statements are made in newspapers and on ad signs.

Turn left towards the old presbytery church.  N 45°7.754' / E 1°39.458'. Follow the blue and yellow line. At the end of the path, go through the gate (don’t forget to close it!) then head left following the traces of St James.

Lanteuil panorama (N 45° 07,686’ / E 001° 39,455’)

Miramont village (N 45° 07,467’ / E 001° 39,768’)

First stop : the house with the gables on its roof ! A gable is a triangular portion of a wall between the edges of a roof. This house has a crow-stepped gable. This technique was used to allow easy access to the roof and to protect the roof’s straw. Crow steps are usually made of flat stones.

Now try to find a peculiar stone with something written on it.
How many “E”s are there?

Write this digit down. It is the equivalent of F : F =_____

Friend’z, cross the hamlet of Miramont and go down to the next intermediate step (3 houses), then to remain on the Way of St James, turn left at N 45°7.238' / E 1°39.545'. After about 200 m, at the crossroads, follow the path on your right. When you get to the road, turn right to get to the next step.

Pilgrim stopover (N 45° 07,183’ / E 001° 39,349’)

Hey look, a farm that sells sheep’s milk goods…

Hmm ! My stomach tells me it’s a good idea to stop here.

Admire the pilgrim sculpture in front of the farm. The red sandstone it is carved in is local, from the Meyssac geological fault.  Nearby, there are two « red » villages : Collonges-la-Rouge and Meyssac.

How many letters are there in the sculptor’s name ?

Write this digit down. It is the equivalent of G : G =_____

Go back to the crossroads at N 45°7.147' / E 1°39.412', then take the small road on your left once again, to head up to the village of Miramont, by following the signs to « La Tournerie ».
