You just added "The cannon trail !" to your bucketlist ! You'll be able to visualize it in your adventure logbook.

(back from the forge in Savignac-Lédrier) Something tells me that buying that cargo of sardine tin keys was not such a great deal after all. I mean, I can imagine someone losing one or two keys… but 1000 ?! Why do I feel like I’ve been fooled by Zéchopp one time too many ? Well, I won’t let it happen again. Oh boy, this is very heavy… (sees a sign on the way) Oh look, another forge !

MASSIVE CLEARANCE SALE ! EVERYTHING MUST GO ! PARTICIPATE IN OUR SWEEPSTAKE ! FIRST COME FIRST SERVED !

Hmmm, well my ship DOES need some new cannons, and perhaps my crew won’t even notice the crates of tin openers… Oh well, you only live once, right ? Let’s go !

Go to the first step by turning right upon exiting the car park.

Cannon road (N45° 13.235 / E0° 59.060)

Oh no, not him again!

Well, well, well, who do we have here ? It looks like my friend the captain! And right on time too! My mate Zouti here has just appointed me to boost the forge sales, and I must say, we do have an offer you can’t refuse! Would you like to take part in our sweepstake and try to win your weight in cannons?

You mean you appointed yourself, right Zécopp ? And besides, everyone knows the forge is…

Being restructured ! Believe me captain, this is an offer you don’t want to miss! Anyway, I have loads of other suckers… I mean customers to tend to, so I’ll just leave you with Zouti here, so he can give you a brief history of the site and enroll you in our sweepstake! You can leave your key cargo here if you like. I can even take a couple of keys off your hands for a few small coins… Anyway, see you later !

A few small coins ??? Pirate !!! Zéchopp took all my gold in exchange for that crate of so-called “top quality” goods! THIEF !!

(taking his role as a tour guide very seriously) Here we are on « cannon road ». They used to transport cannons cast at Forge d’Ans – which we will see a little later on – along this road. Next, they were charroyés jusqu’au port du Moustier transported by cart to the river Vézère where they were loaded onto flat-bottomed boats bateaux à fond plats, les couraux, and hauled to Libourne or Bordeaux. Many a vessel including Royal Marine ships, was equipped with our cannons !

The cannons made at the Ans forge were sent all the way to a port called “Port du M…” . Find the name of this town and count the letters in this word.

Write this digit down. It is the equivalent of A : A =_____

Continue straight ahead at N 45°13.235' / E 000°59.065' to get to the next step.

Transportation (N45° 13.110' / E0° 59.026')

The carts that transported the cannons were horse or cattle-drawn and had to be changed every 10 hours. There are almost 34 kms between the forge and the port, and the carts traveled at an average speed of about 3kms/hour, so just imagine…

Count the horses on the « Le Transport » sign, and add 5 to this number.

Write this number down. It is the equivalent of B : B =_____

Cannon stocks (N45° 12.838' / E0° 58.834')

You can tell French cannons and English ones apart by counting the round reinforcement elements around the stock. English cannons had an extra one.

Count the round reinforcement elements on the yellow cannon, carved on the wooden panel.

Write this digit down. It is the equivalent of C : C =_____

Continue along the path towards Port-du-Moustier then turn immediately to your left at N 45°12.824' / E 000°58.831', walk past the walnut orchard and follow the shady path to get to the next step !

Cannon ! (N45° 12.666' / E0° 59.223')

Different types of cannons were cast at the forge : 12, 8, 6 etc. About 10 different models in fact. The number doesn’t refer to the stock diameters but to the weight of the cannon balls, in pounds. The golden age of cannon-making occurred after the French Revolution : in 1790, 390 cannons were made at the forge, to arm revolutionary frigates in the ports of Bordeaux and Rochefort.

Zisséo, you seem to know a lot about cannons… Can you tell us what type this model is supposed to represent?

There must be a clue here somewhere… Help Zisséo to identify the type of cannon, standing along the edge of the path. It’s a … cannon. Find the missing number.

Write this digit down. It is the equivalent of D : D =_____

Turn left then head down the road to N 45°12.639' / E 000°59.316' and turn left again.

Run for shelter ! (N45° 12.754' / E0° 59.426')

I’ll take four 8s, three 4s and two 12s!

Um… our stocks are… limited !

[BOOM!!!]

(frigtened) RUN FOR SHELTER ! The enemy is on our heels ! Arm the cannons, on my command…

(calm) Well, that’s rather strange ! Such an explosion would have been considered as normal a century or two ago, but nowadays?!

[crash]

(frightened) Hey, we’re being shot at ! I never signed up for this ! And besides, they’re practice-shooting in the wrong direction ! They’re supposed to shoot towards the stream down in the valley ! It was a swampy zone and the spurts of water that occurred whenever a cannonball landed helped to evaluate the quality of the cannons !

It looks like the cannonball is signed ! Quick, run for shelter !

Find the cannonball embedded in the rock and identify its owner thanks to the signature. Now count the letters in this name.

Write this digit down. It is the equivalent of E : E =_____

Raw matter (N45° 12.922' / E0° 59.416')

You know how important raw matter is for cannon-casting, right Zisséo ?

Well, yes, of course !

Ore, limestone, charcoal… all these types of raw matter were extracted locally, which resulted in the destruction of the surrounding forests!

Count the horizontal logs on the sign. Now subtract 8.

Write this digit down. It is the equivalent of F : F =_____

Blame it on the river (N45° 13.196' / E0° 59.489')

Large bellows were used to maintain the temperature required for fusion, in the blast furnaces. These bellows were activated by waterpower, from the river Blâme. Moulding cannons from molten cast-iron was the first step in cannon-making. The next step involved boring the cannons in the workshop.

Count the creatures living in the river’s ecosystem, on the sign that says « Le Blâme ».

Write this digit down. It is the equivalent of G : G =_____

Showroom (N45° 13.320' / E0° 59.245')

(deep in thought) What do you think of number 8 cannonballs? I mean, they must be much easier to carry than a number 12, for example…!

(evasive) I had never really thought about it, to tell you the truth, Zisséo. Oh look, we’re arriving at the showroom!

We’ve got numbers 4, 6, 8, 12 and 36 ! But one is missing! Find the missing model.

Write this digit down. It is the equivalent of H : H =_____
Hint
look up !

Continue along the path then turn right and follow the road at N 45°13.580' / E 000°59.237'. Cross the river Blâme and turn immediately to your left at N 45°13.615' / E 000°59.298'.

The village (N45° 13.649' / E0° 59.262')

There used to be other types of industrial buildings at Forge d’Ans which also used energy from the old hydroelectric power plant, set up by the blast furnaces.

What century was the « Village de la Forge de d’Ans » photo taken in ?

  • XVIII : the number you’re looking for is 8
  • XIX : the number you’re looking for is 9
  • XX : the number you’re looking for is 10

Write down the number associated with the correct answer.

Write this digit down. It is the equivalent of I : I =_____

Continue your way to N 45°13.670' / E 000°59.246' then walk carefully along the road to get to N 45°13.699' / E 000°59.197'. Turn left and walk along the river Auvezère to get to the next step.

The forge (N45° 13.682' / E0° 59.123')

We are now on the forge site. The only vestiges left are its blast furnaces, the Forge Master’s house and the ruins of the old hydroelectric plant. As you can see, it’s going to be quite impossible to honour any new orders ! If I were you, I’d avoid signing any contracts with Zéchopp !

Last sweepstake question : how many blast furnaces (large stone cylinders where raw matter was melted) can you see ?

Write this digit down. It is the equivalent of J : J =_____

Follow the path to get to the next step (cross the street carefully).

A great deal ! (N45° 13.578' / E0° 59.096')

Well, well, well… Who do we have here ? It looks like my favourite client has returned ! Zisséo, I hope your visit has helped you decide how many cannons to order! Unfortunately I have just sold our very last model but I see you answered most of our sweepstake questions correctly, so the good news is that you have a chance at having your name drawn and and winning your weight in cannons! You can also take advantage of our irresistible offer : Buy 100 and get 5% off! How does that sound Zisséo ? Zisséo ?! Where did he go ?!

Go with Zouti to try and catch up with Zisséo to give him the demonstration cannon he won – in exchange for his sardine tin keys – by answering the following question : How many reinforcement cylinders are there on the cannon stock. Write this odd number down.

Write this digit down. It is the equivalent of K : K =_____
