You just added "The battle of Mount Gargan" to your bucketlist ! You'll be able to visualize it in your adventure logbook.

My very first cache ... how exciting ! Especially here, where the WWII Resistance began !

Departure spot : Saint Gilles les Forêts church (N 45° 37,713’ / E 001° 39,927’)

This is the smallest church in Haute-Vienne. Feel free to step inside and have a peek at its treasures !

The house opposite the church was built at the same time the school was built (1919-1920). The house was meant for the school teacher , Georges Guingouin, who was to become a legendary figure of the French Resistance. He was nicknamed « Lo Grand » (The Great) ...

Take your car to the next spot.

Colonel Guingouin's grave (N 45° 37,520’ / E 001° 39,545’)

Georges Guingouin, France’s first War Resistant was given the title of « Liberation companion » by General Charles De Gaulle, who spoke of him as « one of the most important figures of the Resistance». Guingouin was born on February 2nd, 1913, in Magnac-Laval, Haute-Vienne. He died on October 27th, 2005 in the city of Troyes. He was secretary to the communist party and played a major part in the French Resistance Movement. He was head of the Limousin Resistance. This is where he chose to be buried. Georges Guingouin received many medals : « Commandeur de la Légion d’Honneur », « Compagnons de la Libération », « Croix de guerre 39/45 avec palme », « médaille de la Résistance avec rosette », …

Find the Panteix family grave. There is a rather peculiar symbol on it, easily recognizable by Terra Aventura experts.

Which symbol is this ?
1. A hammer and sickle
2. A cross
3. Porcelain

The Panteix- Pardoux family was from Saint Gilles les Forêts. They had a farm in a hamlet called le Chalard, by the Gendillou family’s farm, (Louis Gendillou, a great figure of Guingouin’s Resistance movement, was arrested, tortured and locked up. He organized the resistance in the place where he was being held captive, and freed the Dordogne valley from its occupants.) Nowadays, there is barely anything left of the hamlet. Monsieur Panteix was known to have a strong personality and for being very committed.

In the graveyard, there is a religious symbol on a stone base, which shows where the former St Gilles les Forêts church used to be. The symbol is made of wrought iron. What symbol is this? It's a 5-letter word.
If A = 1, B= 2, C= 3… add the value of each of the letters in this word up, then subtract 2 from the total. (The answer is a number between 50 and 100.)

Write this number down. It is the equivalent of G : G =_____

Paul Rebeyrolle created a piece called « The Cyclops » in honour of Georges Guingouin.

Head back to your car and drive to the carpark at Mount Gargan. Mount Gargan is a classified and protected site, owned by Haute-Vienne’s « Conseil Général » N 45°36.974' / E 1°38.986'.

The mount is 731 metres high. You can get a 360° panoramic view of Limousin and even part of Auvergne, from its top. There are several legends about Mt Gargan. Gargantua is said to have originated here (hence the Mount’s name – the root word gargant means to swallow or devour). Mount Gargan is also linked to a solar cult : Gargantua, probably an ancient Keltic/Gallic god who was turned into a giant (a popular belief, also found in French writer Rabelais’s works). Gargantua personified the sun.

The small orientation table (N 45° 37,160’ / E 001° 38,976’)

Wow, what a view ! Great place for a riddle, if you ask me !

Which « Puy » (peak) is the highest ?
1. Le Puy des Monédières
2. Le Puy de Sancy
3. Le Puy du Barbier

Notre-Dame de bon Secours chapel

No need for GPS coordinates here ! The breathtaking chapel is easy to locate ! It is a granite and local stone chapel, built in the Neo-Gothic style. Its bell tower is 12 metres high and its arrow was never built, due to the town’s lack of money at the time. This also explains why the bronze bell ended up being made of steel. Nowadays, the bell has been placed back in the chapel choir.

What year were the chapel’s ruins consolidated in?
Add the 4 digits together to get a new number.

The rememberance stone (N 45° 37,217’ / E 001° 38,880’)

During World War II, the area around Mount Gargan was an important Resistance spot. On July 14th 1944, thirty-five ally flying fortresses parachuted a great amount of weapons along Mount Gargan for Colonel Guingouin’s resistance movement, which kept getting bigger in the spring of that year, and which had the entire area under control. On July 17th, Georges Guingouin’s Francs-Tireurs and Partisan (FTP) shooters found themselves encircled by several enemy regiments. Despite the large number of enemies and the extreme violence of the battle, Guingouin and his men managed to defeat the Germans and to retain most of their weapons. (43 Resistants’ lives lost / 342 German lives lost).

What was the enemy General’s name ?
1. Otenbacker
2. Ottenbachir
3. Ottenbaher
4. Ottenbacher

The large orientation table (N 45° 37,226’ / E 001° 38,856’)

This is one of my favourite places in Limousin ! Not only is its history fascinating, it also has a remarkable flora: moorland where sheep used to graze (until the 1960s). The vegetation is quite dense and different now that the area is no longer used as pasture land .

How many kilometres is Brive from here ? How many kilometres is Limoges from here?
Subtract the first number (distance from Brive) from the second one (distance from Limoges).
